Diagnosis: Cancer: Leukemia
Parents: Kelly (Nurse in Rady Children’s Peckham Center) & Jared
Kaylee is 3 years old. After a couple of days of high fevers and feeling “yucky,” her mommy took her to the Pediatrician where it appeared to be “just a virus.” As that night progressed, Kaylee’s fevers climbed to 106.2 and she began to shake uncontrollably and vomit. Her mommy rushed her to Rady Children’s Hospital Emergency Department where again it was decided she had a really bad virus and sent back home.
Once she was home, it was only a few hours before things started to get even worse. Kaylee’s fever spiked to 107.1, she began to shake uncontrollably again and started vomiting blood. Her mommy knew something was just not right and rushed her back to the Emergency Department at Rady Children’s Hospital. After labs were drawn, the unthinkable was determined. Kaylee was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia on January 15, 2016. She was immediately send to the Hematology/Oncology unit and started on treatment.
Kaylee’s mommy, Kelly, just so happens to be a nurse on that very same floor where she has worked for 8 years. The care that Kaylee has received on both the clinic and inpatient side of the hospital has been incredible. Of course, the nurses and doctors are her mommy’s friends as well. It’s has been a wonderful gift for Kaylee for have a 24/7 Pediatric Oncology nurse with her, but for her mommy it has been heart wrenching. She has taken care of children with cancer for years, but at the end of the day…she went home to her perfectly healthy babies. This was no longer the case.
For years, Kelly thought her childhood experiences had led her into oncology nursing. Now this very well might be the case, but that wasn’t the end of the story. When Kelly was 12 years old, her best friend, Jessica, was diagnosed with cancer. After a long 16 months, Jessica lost her battle. Seeing how cancer affects families first hand, sent Kelly onto the path of an Oncology nurse. Again, little did she know that one of those tiny patient’s would be her very own daughter. Being by Jessica’s side through her battle and all the years as an Oncology bedside nurse has given Kelly all the experience she needs to take care of Kaylee.
Kaylee is doing very well in her treatment, but will continue battling until about Spring of 2018. She is the perfect amount of sweet and spicy! She loves princesses and bows. Her big brother, Drew, is her best friend and has been by her side through this from the beginning. She is a strong willed little girl which has only helped and will continue to her fight this ugly beast.
